Busy day on Moosilauke! As far as I can tell I was the third person to summit from Gorge Brook as two people descended as I was hiking up. I started with spikes and switched to snowshoes at 3000’. By 3500’ snowshoes were the best choice. I got to tree line and there was wind and very low visibility. I made my way to the summit by following the trail on my phone because I couldn’t see it otherwise. Same thing to find the trail on the descent back to tree line since my tracks were already covered by the wind.
Passed a lot of people on the descent. At least two groups of eight people and 5-6 groups of two and a few other solo hikers. These groups had many people in spikes and the trail was churned up pretty good making snowshoes still the better choice. |
