We started off up Airline but quickly decided to turn back and go up Valley Way instead. Maybe 4 people had been on Airline since the last snow but it was not consoidated and would have been a lot more work to use that than going up/down Valley Way. Valley Way was extremely well packed until above the tent site then it had enough loose snow on top of a solid base that snow shoes would have been easier. Two of our group used snowshoes for that section and the rest struggled with some backsliding in spikes because we knew we would end up switching back out of snowshoes as soon as we got to the hut. I put on Hillsound Pros at the hut and kept them on the rest of the day. Others did fine in spikes and one used snowshoes on Gulfside. There is only some minor ice on the summits. Overall everything is in excellent condition. |
