Glorious day for some snowshoes that have solid traction, leave your aluminum frames at home. Saw few people out with the range of microspikes, trail crampon & full crampon… per my company, hillsound hiking crampons didn’t hold up for the soft snow pack in especially the steeper sections up to East Peak. A real slip & slide, trust your trees kinda trek up with those. You know your pick but my ascents sailed right up. I think you’d be in for a struggle with anything but full crampons / snowshoes, but could still get the job done in hiking crampons.. microspikes would be likely a huge effort beyond anything else… at the end of the day, hikers choice but it is very soft… not firmly packed & likely to get some fresh powder on top after the weekend, so I’d opt for the snowshoes. Some scattered post holes throughout the trail… stay to the center of the trail otherwise you end up sinking into the side off the trail.
The bypass to the bypass (lower option) of the chimney is the way we choose up & down, after looking at the other bypass I’m happy with my life choices there. The chimney itself hasn’t been touched. Some warmer days & folks with snowshoes out there, may do this trail a wonderful hard pack but until then, if you wanna spike it up.. maybe best to wait since that flotation, will save you a lot of the suffer fest it could be.
Have fun playing in the snow & as always, make safe choices 👍🥾
