Great day on the Inner Loop today. Trails are set pretty well. Two of us used spikes (Hillsounds) the whole day and one used spikes/snowshoes/spikes. Saw one other hiker and he was in snowshoes. Conditions are such that either tool works depending on what you like/ are comfortable with. The trails for the most part are just loose enough/soft enough that if you like a bit more stability and grip(no sliding) then go with the snowshoes. If those conditions don't bother you go with the spikes and leave four pounds in your car. Trail was least consolidated between Anna and Mack. The Mack-Klem loop was well tracked as was really everything else. I went out to the view on Klem and it was less broken/consolidated but still fine. Looks like minimal use of DRQT out from West Quarry to East. Very nice track down Marsh Crossing making the descent very easy. The steeps on Rand and West Quarry had plenty of snow for traction and very minimal ice. The "Hillary Step" on Rand had a nice snow ramp so an easy up. All and All a VERY nice day in the Belknaps with Dave and Brenda! |
