Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: At the second gate on Ravine Lodge Rd. The road was fine for driving but as I was coming in, a pickup had driven off the road into a ditch. No idea what happened there. Secure your belongings on Rt. 118 as it has returned to its semi-natural state as a frost heave roller coaster.

Comments
Comments: A gorgeous day on The Moose. Bright sun, deep blue sky, and just a whisper of wind which made it comfortable enough for a longer summit stay.

IMO, snowshoes are still the most efficient means of travel on these trails. If you need to step off the trail for any reason without them, you are going to sink. A lot. There is a lot of snow on the mountain.

Road walk: No issues, other than the uphill walk on the way back. :P

Gorge Brook: Fairly well packed but with some soft snow on top. A skier had come down the trail as I was ascending and had dislodged bits of loose snow from the sides of the track. Upper part of the trail has some very narrow sections due to snow-laden trees.

Carriage Road across the ridge: Well packed by skiers and 'shoers. The snow is so deep that there are views in nearly all directions that aren't normally possible. Narrow in places due to snow-laden trees. The route varies a bit coming off the summit as some of the smaller cairns are buried.

Carriage Road between Glencliff and Snapper: Traveled by skiers but still somewhat soft. I was making dents even with snowshoes. Narrow in places due to snow-laden trees. Many head/eye obstacles to watch for. Someone in bare boots had also postholed this section. I do not recommend this.

Snapper: Has seen less use than Gorge Brook. There was a snowshoe trench but it was chopped up and postholed. This trail definitely needs more snowshoe love.

Several other hikers were out enjoying the day long with lots of skiers. I met two of them at the trailhead, caught up to them at the summit, then saw them again back at the trailhead. They had a full day!
