Inspired by seeing Carl G's recent trip report since that big snowstorm, I thought I'd take advantage of his tracks to follow up this summit. There has been a little traffic on the Nancy Pond Trail, but it is still unconsolidated and requires snowshoes. At 1.6 miles in, just across the major stream crossing, I could clearly see the split off the Nancy Pond Trail, onto the old fire tower trail. Carl's tracks were already quite blown in on the lower elevations of the fire tower trail, but they were still easy enough to follow. At the 3000 foot knob, I found myself in chest deep snowdrifts, with no signs of any prior footprints. I got to enjoy the unique views looking up the valley towards Crawford Notch on a bluebird day from the lookouts there, but decided not to keep dealing with the swimmable snowdrifts with almost a mile left to the summit and turned around at that point. |
