Comments
Comments: The siren call of blue skies, low winds, and temps warner than -20 sounded across the northeast, and every mother’s son (and daughter!) converged on the Presidential Range like ants at a picnic. Happy to report that over 2/3rd of the ants marching to and from the summit of Mt Pierce rocked snowshoes, so the trail was quite dreamy. Snowshoes are really the weapon of choice with our beach sand snow, and above Mitzpah cutoff the depth of the snowpack makes it necessary unless you *like* sinking up to your bum in frozen precipitation. The trench depth was insane, with snow above my waist (I’m 5’8”) in most places above Mitzpah Hut cutoff. We couldn’t find the Alpine Zone sign at all, but the cutoff trench to the true summit is well-defined. The last .1 miles is windswept ice, but snowshoes had plenty of traction. The trail to Eisenhower is also well-broken out, but still soft. On my way back down I observed a single set of snowshoe tracks had broken out the Mitzpah Hut cutoff. The trail to Gibbs Falls is also broken out. Plenty of familiar faces, to include Chef, Roz, Diane, Andrea and Hiker Ed! My 15th time on this summit, and this was the anniversary of my first winter 4K, which was Mt Pierce on Jan 31, 2021!
