Everyone took advantage of the sunshine and low winds to hike the northern presidentials today. A group had broken out the Cog so we followed it to Gulfside Trail and then the Jefferson Loop Trail. Above tree line the terrain was very hard/icy snow. Spikes or crampons would have worked best for traction. Snowshoes were good on the Cog. When we came back down we had hoped to go via Jewell which we were told would be broken out, but when we reached the sign it had not been broken out. They must have taken a shortcut that we missed. We came back down the Cog which was very sketchy in places. We hopped over the track to stay left to avoid the risk of a slide over the edge. What had looked like a great tracked out path on the way up had become an unconsolidated mess of snow that was annoying to traverse. |
