No other cars in the lot when I arrived around 7:30am. The road walk (Alton Mountain Road? Old Stage Road? Not sure what the right name is) had been groomed for snowmobiles, but no riders had been on it when I started.
Anna-Goat from the road up to the summit of Anna has seen a lot of snowshoe traffic and was well packed. That said, I think bareboots/spikes might still have weak traction as the surface is basically a few inches of packed but soft snow. Also FYI the Precipice trail was unbroken.
I broke trail from the summit of Anna to Mack. The water crossings weren't too bad; one was a little tricky to find the best way across. None were particularly deep, just enough to soak your feet and ruin the day.
At the summit of Mack there was a single set of snowshoe tracks that appeared to come from Camp Bell. They were partially filled in so I'm assuming they were a few days old. You'll definitely want snowshoes if you try to get Mack from Camp Bell.
I broke trail over to Klem. At the junction of the Klem summit spur and DRQ trail there was a similar set of tracks that appeared to be a few days old from a single hiker. The DRQ trail over to Rand hadn't been touched since the last storm.
Breaking trail over to Rand was interesting. It wasn't too bad dropping down from Klem but climbing up Rand, specifically the ledges, was challenging. There was a lot of snow there and it was very difficult to keep traction. I veered slightly off the official trail to take a safer route, if you were to fall here I think you'd slide to the bottom and possibly get buried in snow. If I was to do this route again I'd most likely bushwhack north of Rand and approach the summit that way. Once at the summit there was a nicely broken in track coming from West Quarry.
Rand to West Quarry back to Anna was nicely broken in. When I got back to Anna it looked like a small group of 2-3 hikers had started following my track from Anna out to Mack, hopefully they were doing the full loop too :) |
