Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: When I arrived around 8:30 there were no other cars along the road and evidence of newish snow (as well as some slip-sliding conditions on my way up), so I opted to park with one other car in the Highland Center's Day Use parking ($10). I didn't feel like coming back to my car and finding it in worse condition than I left it!

Comments
Comments: Avalon Trail is nicely packed. In addition to me, I saw three other women using it, adding to the packing. A-Z was a different story. There was some drifting, especially around the middle section between Avalon Tr and Mount Tom Spur. Here, I had to do some trail finding. On my way back, I could still make out where I had gone, but it was once again drifted over, so likely the same will have happened by now. Tom Spur also had drifting. In short, for the A-Z and Tom portions, snowshoes were a must and it would be helpful to have a few more people go over these places to pack them down more. Also, apologies if there are a few diverging tracks on Tom's summit! I was having to hunt around a bit to find it, since from the false summit on, it was hard to find the previous hiker's tracks.

Another note, A-Z onward from Tom Spur did NOT look well packed and from what I saw and heard, no one was headed that way, so if you plan on going that way (or taking Willey Range from Field to Tom), plan on some extra time and effort. It looks like Avalon Tr past the junction with A-Z headed to Avalon itself had a snowshoer today and a few other barebooters were headed up there, so it will probably be in reasonable condition.

Happy and safe hiking everyone!
