XC skied my way up Zealand Rd, great conditions and really enjoyed (a new hobby of mine). At the Hale Brook Trailhead I switched to snowshoes. The trail had been broken out but was not packed by any means. I was working hard solo through the soft snow and about half way up, did some time and energy calculations and realized it was the right choice to turn back. I returned the way I came and am willing to say the lower half of Hale Brook is in much more conducive conditions now. Skiing back down Zealand Rd was lovely and was exactly what I imagined using XC skiing for when I learned. Zealand Rd has a pretty well packed out path now thanks to the youth group that was going up to the hut but i could still see some soft prints from someone before they switched to snowshoes. |
