Comments
Comments: Leaving this report to note that spikes were the traction of choice today. Being unsure of conditions two of us wore snowshoes, and two of us did spikes. The snowshoes did come in handy at the base of the ledge, with its big step up on blue ice, where we diverted left in the snow. Even as we ascended up the steeps above the ledges, we found only a few inches of packed snow. Tonight’s oncoming storm may add some more but there’s a thick ice layer beneath and passing
We got a 12:30 pm start so we hiked up to just above the Dickey ledges, then turned around to make it back in time to catch the start of the game. Hikers who did the entire counterclockwise loop said that ascending Welch was pretty icy, although plenty of sizable groups were out there today. Despite low clouds, we still got quite the views.
