Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: We were glad there was only a dusting of snow because I wouldn’t want to park roadside if there were plow trucks out. It seems the side of the road opposite the trail by the river is plowed a little bit wider though.

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Sketchy snowbridges crossing Stony Brook twice to start and end the whack. I’m surprised it doesn’t show up on some maps, it’s a good sized brook and quite lovely.

Comments
Comments: We went up the trail maybe 1.5 miles until we came to FR 513. We wore snowshoes from the start though the trail hardly had enough snow for that down low, only 3 inches or so. The old FR didn’t have much appeal to us so we went a little higher, crossed steeply down and over the ravine of the brook and found nice wide open hardwoods on the other side. The snow got deeper, about a foot, and I was glad for my large snowshoes, and not much clumping despite temps above freezing. We may have passed the FR again, or perhaps other roads, it was hard to tell in the open woods. As Bartlett Haystack came into view, we headed up towards the col to try and go up the side which looked less steep. It got steeper and thicker but I was able to zigzag and pick a good line through the obstacles. We followed the ridge to the summit cone, then very steeply down and over to the NE peak. This was a quick one, then we basically headed back straight towards the trailhead, zigzagging steep and thick for a long while, then we found a good old road not on the map, and even an old oil can. The whack was about 4.3 miles off trail and it was a 7 hour day.
