 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
The trailhead parking is plowed … and like everything right now, is a skating rink. |
|
 | Surface Conditions: |
Ice - Black, Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular |
|
 | Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes, Light Traction |

 | Water Crossing Notes: |
The vast majority of hikers are going the old way (to the left, 3 crossings). All 3 are open. You will walk on submerged rocks for the first one, and rock hop that crazy side to side pattern for the second. The third one has little (read:unstable) rocks to walk on, although my pup used a skinny log. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Two things to note. The flat straightaway that directly precedes the water crossing has 8 (yep, 8) sad paper birch stepovers. None are really obstructive. The bigger problem is the foliage forced downward by ice and snow - it is making people walk around it in multiple trail sections - and those spots are where the postholes are. So if you want to bring a tool and help this trail, bring loppers and not a saw! |

 | Dog-Related Notes: |
Oh my pupper had herself a fine adventure today!! An endless number of small critters got their cardio and none were harmed. |

It seems that most people are leaving the snowshoes at home for this one, right now. I hiked this two weeks ago (in snowshoes) and it was the same deal. This has created a firm but VERY skinny trail. If you tightrope walk, you are good to go! Based on an IG post from Sunday I knew that snowshoes were not needed, as I am adept at tightrope walking!! Light traction is needed in three places- the ice skating rink at the trailhead, the frosty rocks I stepped on for the water crossings, and the stairs up to the tower. I was way too lazy to remove my Hillsounds for the hike and just wore them door to door. We only saw two other people today (congrats again on finishing your 48 today!) and had great views from Signal Ridge. The tower was not socked in when we were up there but pretty much everything around us was. But we didn’t mind - it’s a beautiful hike! |
