Trails: Lonesome Lake
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Tuesday, January 13, 2026
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: As noted by others, the big parking area (left turn after the I-93S off-ramp) has not been plowed. Parking is at a smaller area just past a building, on the right at the end of the ramp. That area had just a few spots left for our two cars.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Three, but all have foot bridges. Only the first, upon leaving the big parking area, had water flowing. One could argue about a fourth "crossing," the lake itself, but that's solidly frozen over, with snow over the ice.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: No blowdowns to report.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw two; easy walking for them.

Lost and Found
Lost and Found: A glove is still atop a post by the bridge next to the parking area; snow cover suggests it's been there a while. There is another glove, in decent shape, hanging on a branch next to the last sign at the campground area; It was hanging from a draw string, upside down, and snow had collected inside it. I shook out what snow I could and repositioned the glove to avoid future snow inside it.

Comments
Comments: A nice winter outing for eight of us OTHH. As expected, the heavy foot traffic has packed the snow down to that "white sidewalk in the woods" shape, easily traveled with just light traction. There are a few steeper sections, which made me wonder if I should have gone up with snowshoes, just for the heel lifters (aka televators). When we got to the lake, we followed prior traffic directly across the snow-covered lake to the opposite shore just below the hut. Inside the hut were a pair of women who had eight very young children with them. Four of them had walked up, while the other four had been carried up by the women!
