Warm day, and took advantage by adding the Wildcats. Started up 19MB in spikes which was boney. Headed over the South Carter first, which required snowshoes. I was the first on the trail, so while there was resemblance of a path, the rain and wind had crusted over the first 3-6". There was a blowdown on the way to Middle that required some careful maneuvering. Heading back to Dome, I ran into a few groups that had packed down the trail a bit more and it was faster travel. Up Cater Dome, which was well travelled. Decided at that point to hedge my bets and try Wildcat. Down to the hut required crampons. You probably could have done it in spikes, but would have been sketchy. I knew this stretch would be tough, so I carried all 3 foot options at the expense of being heavy. Grabbed water at the hut and headed up A. Again, well travelled but a bit mash potato after the temps during the day. Hit the top of the ski trail at 4:45 to see the sun dip behind Mt Washington. 2 hours down the ski trail in the dark, road walk to my car. What a day!! |
