Comments
Comments: Forecast called for clearing and lowering winds, but guess we were too early because we didn't get either! In the clouds all day with some hefty winds just below the hut and all the way up/down Monroe, very limited visibility and freezing fog. We were a group of five. Snowshoes worn start to finish, although sharp spikes / trail crampons would also be approp for the section above the hut to Monroe summit. Broke trail from the start following a faint trench, and one set of boot tracks. A few inches of new snow down low, increasing to 6-8"+ new snow up high w/ some drifting. Snow is soft/unconsolidated up to the hut and snowshoes best choice. There is some ice below the snow on the rocky, ledgy areas so just be aware. The track up to the hut comes out to the L of the hut so just be aware of where you are especially in low visibility. Above the hut - hard ice and hard pack, wind scoured slab encountered with some exposed rock. Visibility was very limited to the summit and any tracks made were erased just as quickly by the wind. It was a "pick your own path and just try to stay on your feet" kind of day! The dungeon was open and the space provided a good refuge out of the wind before and after the Monroe climb to layer up and have a snack.
