5 of us decided to go for Monroe today and had hoped the winds and clouds would have settled down enough to head over to Washington, but that wasn’t the safest choice, so when we reached the LOC hut and layered up for the Monroe push , we pretty much knew that would be it for this day. We used snowshoes all the way up to the hut which were the best option. We left them on for Monroe summit cone and I think sharp spikes or K10s would’ve been better on that last section after the hut. There was a lot of solid ice under a little wind blown snow there. We powered up slowly in the strong wind and all stayed close enough to each other to be sure no one got left behind in the fog. The fog left a thick coating of ice on our poles and rime was forming on our clothes. A challenging day for sure but a super fun descent back down Ammo trail mostly on our rear sides not always by choice but nice powdery snow. Saw a few skiers heading up on the way down too. Powder is fun for all! Glad to have finished off another peak for my and Robin’s grid and grateful for the 3 grid finishers who came to charity hike with us. |
