Always a fabulous view for a late start, time-compressed hike. Snow cover was a little bony in spots though the trees down low, however starting about a third of the way on ascent, the 2 to 8 inch unconsolidated snow pack really merited snow shoes, so I’m glad we wore them. The trail to Plymouth Mtn was unbroken and we wanted to get back for the game so we skipped it.
While the Monday 12/29 ice and rains will probably change this, I’m glad we packed down a decent trench.
To the two hikers who passed us saying that they “broke trail for us” by wearing micro spikes - instead of breaking trail, you left us a path of divots that we needed to fix. Fortunately, the snow was soft, but still- Perhaps you are newbies, however wearing snow shoes when conditions merit - ie snow is not firmly packed down at the trailhead and when you see you’re leaving a path of 3 to 6-inch boot holes in the snow - is good hiking citizenship for others who follow you, and also far easier for you. End of rant. |
