Comments
Comments: Spikes door to door today. The bottom third or so of Liberty Springs was wiped out pretty good by the rain. It’s more rock and mud than snow. After the water crossings, it gradually fills in, and conditions are excellent—well-packed down, no postholes, no ice—from about 2,500’ to Liberty. Going over to Flume, it’s a bit softer and drifted at a couple of spots. If you really really love snowshoes, you could have worn them here. Everyone I saw was wearing spikes, and I did as well. It’s pretty darn hardpacked under the fluffier surface, and I just don’t think there’s enough there for snowshoes to really do much. If you’re worried about ice from the rain, this hike has none of it. The trails are nice and hardpacked, perfect for fast spike travel.
