Amazing to see the vast difference in conditions on this side of the range. Unlike Mt. Rowe, the lower portion of this approach (somewhat northern exposure) had a fair amount of snow coverage, albeit not too deep. I was able to bareboot, but others may prefer light traction.
Piper-Whiteface Link is very dangerous right now, as a number of the angled ledges on the upper half of the trail are covered in black and blue ice. I did not feel safe descending with just Microspikes, and didn't want to destroy moss/vegetation adjacent to the trail, so I opted to bushwhack down the drainage and ridge to the north (pretty good going). Hillsounds would be adequate for the ledges, but would be abused with all of the bare rock in between. I don't plan to be back until we get a moderate snowfall to cover things.
Partly sunny late morning/early afternoon with temperatures in the 30s and some wind. |
