Not sure of the name of this peak, but it is abruptly northwest of Moose Pond, which was my destination. There's only a trace of snow on the entire mountain today. I followed the east bank of the Steam Mill Brook most of the way up to Moose Pond. There is a remarkably distinct transition centered on the brook, with the west bank all hardwoods and the east bank all conifers. After lunch at the pond, I decided to go over the knob to the NW since I wanted to follow the NW ridge back down. Upon reaching the HOL, I found the canister, and based on entries, I think it is known as Moose Pond Mt. West Peak. I followed the NW ridge back down, but it is a very broad ridge so there isn't a well-defined ridge nose to follow. There's lots of beech on this ridge and lots of fresh sign of bears who aren't in the their dens. |
