The Basin trailhead is just prior to the closed gate of the Basin Campground, which is just prior to the closed gate on Rt 113 at the Maine/NH border. Today’s loop was up Basin, the Hermit Falls loop, a right on Basin Rim to the West Royce Mtn summit, then continue on the Royce trail to Rt 113 for a road walk back to the Basin TH.
The Basin trail begins as an easy forest walk to Hermit Falls. The falls were worth the detour. The trail from this point on became steeper and steeper until it reached the Basin Rim junction. It was quite the climb. Ran into some thin snow around 2000’ and it was about 3” at its deepest just past the West Royce summit. Because the leaves are gone, there were some good views along the way. The descent down Royce was slow and tricky due to snow and leaves on the steep upper section of the trail. The Cold River and the nearby cliffs and ledges were great. |
