Today we were able to bareboot up as far as Mt. Surprise. At a point, we realized we would use less energy putting on our Hillsounds, which were just the right ticket today. Lower third of the trail a mix of rock, crusty snow and mud. Ledges were icy but there was enough snow around the edges to hike around the ice. The upper third of the trail had a nice base layer of packed snow, that made our descent "fly!" Looks like some folks were butt sliding in places, which regrettably created tricky smooth patches on the steep slaps. Microspikes were the ticket. No place we could have used snowshoes just yet. |
