I needed to hike South Carter a my 46th 4000footer and added Hight to make the hike worth it. Arrived on Hight around 10am when the clouds started to roll over the Presis. Still had great views and then I hiked South Carter with no stress for the views :)
The trail goes from fall to winter with a looong transition zone in between. No snow at first, then thin snow and iced sections, running water in spots. After the fork with Carter Dome trail the snow becomes more present but still very thin until the approch of Zeta Pass. I put my spikes on 1/4 before Zeta Pass because the trail was completely iced for a while and I wished I had time to put on snowshoes (the clouds were coming) on the way up mount Hight as it was unbroken with about 6 inches of fresh snow. Carter-Moriah trail is mostly packed. |
