Comments
Comments: It was rock spikes and snowshoes today. 19MB Trail started off with very light snow/ice. Some spot are more icy and some spots are bare, wet ground. I barebooted to Carter Dome Trail then put the rock spikes on. The upper half of this trail had some good ice runofff in a few spots, but managed fine in just the rock spikes. Right after Zeta Pass I opted for snowshoes - mostly tired of carrying them on my back, but this section had an okay amount of unconsolidated snow. Not nearly as much snow as I expected but the trail benefitted from snowshoes. Still some rocks and roots exposed on this stretch. A set of bareboot tracks heading up Hight but I don't know how far they got - the easy side up Hight (closer to Carter dome) was not tracked out at all. At the summit I made the decision to go down the notch side towards the hut (Carter-Moriah trail) because that side hill from Zeta is a slog to me (in any season) and especially yesterday. I'm glad I had the snowshoes down this stretch- there was significantly more snow on this side (5-12" or maybe more in some spots) and there was just one set of bareboot/spike tracks that came up..and hats off to them because that must have been an effort. This section is mostly a mess with having just the bareboot tracks and now my one set of snowshoe tracks. Really unconsolidated powder. Some large rocks hiding as snow drifts were a little jarring to hit but they're at least more obvious to see now. Changed back to rock spikes after the view point of the notch and kept them on all the way out. Snowshoes recommended for higher up -*especially* if going up from the notch/hut side. Saw only two people early on and the caretaker lower down again. Finished in the dark, took about 40 mins longer than I expected with the conditions.
