Rock spikes and snowshoes today. Rock spikes went on fairly soon as there was a bit of ice after the first water crossing. At the junction of A-Z Trail there were no tracks heading towards Tom so I put the snowshoes on. Looked like one set of bareboot tracks coming down from the day before. There wasn't a ton of fresh snow but a few inches. There were a couple awkward spots with rocks still poking through but snowshoes proved more helpful than not. One guy passed me going to Tom in just spikes. No tracks going up Willey Range Trail, this is probably where snowshoes were the most helpful. Seemed like it took the guy behind me a while to do this stretch with no snowshoes but he did it nonetheless. I went down the Avalon Trail and kept the snowshoes on mostly because there were icy spots on the steeps and my rock spikes would not have cut it, I felt safer with the traction on my snowshoes. Switched back to rock spikes at the water crossing. Only saw a couple people out and all the tracks I saw were just bareboot or spikes. I like snowshoes so it was an obvious choice to minimize the struggle but this was not a crazy trail breaking experience. Snowshoes probably a good idea if doing anything other than Tom. |
