Amazing day above the undercast. Warm, sunny and only a 15-20 mph breeze on Washington summit. Hung for over an hour there. Conditions were all over the place around the loop and will undoubtedly change with the rain and very warm temps. predicted. In the morning, things were firm and microspikes were great to the summit and down to near Mt. Clay alongside the Cog. Then there was a very icy stretch and we changed to crampons and once climbing over the shoulder of Clay, switched back to microspikes as its very bony there. Stayed in those until a couple of hundred yards down the Jewell trail where we switched to snow shoes for the rest of the descent. As everyone experienced yesterday, conditions are rapidly deteriorating.
By afternoon, snow was very soft. On the upper exposed section of the Jewell trail, any deviation off of the monorail will have you up to your knees or deeper. As you descend into the trees, conditions continually change until its mostly soft ice by the bottom. Things are just going to get worse this coming week. That said, wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else.
Many people on the trail. Nice seeing John G. at the trailhead and Guy J. doing his ranger gig on top. |
