Our group of seven did a counterclockwise Webster-Jackson-Pierce loop.
Snow throughout ascent to Webster, with some icy patches and water. Some folks put on spikes around 3000ft after Silver Cascade, but things were fine without spikes. Descending to Silver Cascade was a bit slow as the snow was a bit deeper (6-8”) but unconsolidated with bare rock below - no traction would’ve been super helpful. Snow was pretty sugary between Webster and Jackson (maybe 3-5”), but we didn’t need snowshoes, and things should be somewhat packed after us and several groups doing just Webster-Jackson.
Last ascent to Jackson was a bit slick (loose powder over a thin layer of ice) — no traction was super helpful here, and we passed a group who was descending and having a tough time. We got up in a mix of spikes and snowshoes, and we all put on snowshoes after the initial descent from Jackson. Jackson to Mizpah and to Pierce (probably 8”? snowshoes went in a few inches, but rocks weren’t always filled in) should be well broken out now, but the snow was very sugary and may fill in. A snowshoeless party had descended to Mizpah from Pierce and left some deep postholes, hopefully filled in now.
Crawford path was cruisy and streamlike. Some slightly icey snow at the top, mostly slush below. Not sure spikes helped here at all, but some of us put them on after Pierce. |
