Really a tale of 3 hikes today. Below Mitzpah Cutoff, I bare-booted. Some were using spikes, but most were bare booting. The trail is a mix of dirty snow, minor water, and avoidable mud. Very shoulder season-ey conditions. Above Mitzpah Cutoff to Pierce, it’s more typical Pierce in winter conditions. The snow is consistent and covers the rocks, and the Pierce Superhighway is packed down and in good shape. I wore spikes here, but some were still bare-booting. Dealer’s choice, I guess.
After Pierce, it’s a sudden and dramatic shift to deeper snow and some larger drifts. In this section, it became clear that in trusting someone else’s word from earlier in the week and being a rookie and leaving my snowshoes in the car, I’d made a big mistake. If not for 3 others in snowshoes who broke it out and let me ride coattails, I’d never have made it. (Fun fact, we discovered in the course of chatting that they rode my coattails on a brutal trail break up Carter Dome 2 years ago; that made me feel a tad less indebted to them). The trail over to Eisenhower was well packed down by others’ traffic by the time I headed back, but it WILL get drifted in again. MANY others made the same mistake as me and went over to Eisenhower with only spikes today; this is fair warning to all to get the snowshoes out. The snow is thin down low, but it fills in very, very fast. :)
Great day on the Presis! |
