Comments
Comments: Usual shoulder season conditions as expected. Wet with leaves, mud, and water down low. Some snow appeared about a mile in but nothing significant (less than 1 inch) until the beginning of the ledges. Once we hit the ledges there was 2-3 inches of wet sticky snow, we switched to rock spikes as there was some ice but it was very sporadic. Due to warmer temps the ice was easy to bite into with even dull rock spikes, with colder temps sharper spikes would be best (we brought rock spikes and new spikes). Snow increased slightly as we went higher, got to about 2-4 inches at the lookout and down to Kate sleeper, there was a few occasional drifts with about 6 inches of snow. We saw no tracks until Kate sleeper where we saw a set of tracks heading toward Passaconaway. We took our spikes off at Kate sleeper as they were balling up so much with the sticky snow. Along Rollins there was much of the same, 2-4 inches of wet sticky snow, ice on rocks that made footing slick at times but spikes would not have helped. This remained true to the summit of Passaconaway, along some of the rock slabs there are a few ice bulges but can be avoided without needing spikes. The Tracks we ran into continued toward the other side of Passaconaway and we never saw them again so we assume they did a traverse. Dicey’s mill has between 1-3 inches of snow until the water crossing when it all pretty much disappeared and turned back into wet leaves and mud. There were no tracks on Dicey’s mill so it would appear we were the only ones out today.
