First hike of the season with hot tomato soup. What a treat! It was really nice to have in the col between waumbek and starr king. Fast conditions up. Trace snow starts right away. Ice starts on the sidehill section around 3200'. Put traction on around 3500'. Kept it on until we got off the sidehill into the hardwoods. on the way down. Track is very well packed and hard. All ice was grippy. Mud below 3000' was treacherous and VERY slippery. I had a bumb touch. Tried to stay on rocks after that, which slowed me down and annoyed motha rush'ya. Saw a couple who didn't bring traction and regretted it, but still completely the hike, so it was possible. Saw another guy who made it to waumbek without traction, but put it on for the descent. There were three drifts at the summit of Waumbek, but they were all packed and hardened. Now views, in the clouds, which was disappointing because it was clear from the parking lot. Should have gotten up earlier! There was some running water on trail around the spring area, so you could get a drink if you wanted to save some weight. No slush and all mud frozen up high. Started raining lightly on descent. |
