Peaks
Peaks Mt. Moriah, NH
Trails
Trails: Herd path, Stony Brook Trail, Carter-Moriah Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Thursday, March 15, 2012
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parking lot at the trailhead is easily accessible. No cars when we arrived. We parked on Mt. Carter road to use the herd path ~0.2 miles from the trailhead (to avoid the early crossings of Stony Brook).
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Wet/Sticky, Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Bridged or easily passable. Open water everywhere. Bridges are beginning to look unstable. Did not cross Stony Brook early (see below).
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A couple of blowdowns on the Stony Brook trail - but they are easy "duck under".
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Easy for dogs and plenty of water at the lower sections. The slushy conditions later in the day can be tiring for for the dogs - and the snow outside the forming mono-rail cannot support the dogs.

Comments
Comments: We started reasonably early in hope of a solid trail. It worked. Georg bare-booted all the way. I used microspikes on the ascent and snowshoes on the Stony Brook trail section of the descent.

The rapidly forming mono-rail is solid but quite narrow. Miss it by a few inches and you are stepping through. Plenty of signs of barebooting/postholing - but the trail is not too bad.

On the Carter-Moriah trail the ledges are snow and ice free. It is either struggling with snowshoes over the ledges or struggling without them on the snow-sections.

With this hike Georg, Cinnilla and I completed our 48-in-1. We missed John and Pepper but they were with us in spirit. Wonderful to see Erica and Guy who hiked up to meet us. Thanks!

Clouds today were "undercast" and the views from Moriah were spectacular. No winds and pleasant temperatures.
