Comments
Comments: Good amount of leaves down early- there's one small section of trail after the slabs that was slightly hard to see where the trail went -I've done this multiple times so I was okay but it did give me pause.. very small section though, you won't get lost, just be aware. Snow started a bit before the Tom Wiggins jct. Mostly snow and not ice so I didn't need rock spikes at that point. The first big sloping ledge was devoid of any snow and ice but everything after had a mix of breakable ice crust, snow, and really thick ice. After the first ledge I opted to put rock spikes on for a little help, but it was messy as the ice either crumbles away, or the spikes hit rock under the snow, or the ice was too thick for just worn out rock spikes. Good shoulder season fun. Everytime my short legs reach these ledges, I think "how did I ever get up here before?" It was not graceful and there was a lot of sketchy footing. It's doable with time and patience. Would be better with more ice or snow coverage though. I kept the spikes on for the small descent on Rollins Trail then up to the summit. The rocks going down this section were *icy* covered in light snow and I saw the tracks in front of me took a few slips (they did not have traction). A little balling up snow on the spikes but worth the security. Kept them on to the last ledge on my way down. The ledges took more time than I anticipated but I still made okay time and out before dark.
