Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Lots of parking at the Crawford Depot on this dreary Monday. On the return there were a lot of tourists super mad that the bathrooms were not accessible. I snuck by the mayhem and got out of there!!

Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Rock hops with lots of options
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There is a skinny stepover on the Avalon Trail within sight of the Avalon Spur. The Willey Range Trail between Field and Willey has really grown in and is now quite the car wash (ask me how I know).
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: This is a great route for dogs and mine had a fine day. We saw no other pups today.

Comments
Comments: We hiked the loop clockwise (up Avalon, down AZ) and saw lots of people hiking ccw. Snow covered the trail starting around 3000’ so I pulled on my rock spikes at the Avalon Spur and kept them on until the start of the Tom Spur. They most definitely helped with the icy bog bridges and the slippery descents off Field and Willey, but by the time we got to Tom it had warmed up and the near-constant snow had become rain-snow so I pulled them off. I have hiked this route now 12 times and the Avalon Trail remains super confusing about halfway between the AZ junction and the Avalon Spur (there is a hard left turn that I always miss). More signage could be helpful there. The mudpit near the Tom summit has grown significantly in size, over time, and there are currently two long, unavoidable stretches of ankle deep mud. The weather was so consistently spritzing that not even the grey jays were out, but all of the hikers we passed were having a good day (as were we!)
