Whatta day! Original plan was Savage and then East Spruce. But, being 3 chatty women cruising along a skid path, we overshot our planned turn to Savage. By the time we realized it, we were much closer to the start of the route we planned to East Spruce (we were not going to traverse summits). Away, we went! Stayed to the north on the way up in decent woods full of slippery snow, signed in and headed back to the vicinity of our route, albeit a more southerly line until we hit another road. From this point we stayed mostly low along the skidder road until we started up Savage. It was a groovy, gnarly and slippery mess of terrain, with a few joyful boulders and thickets along the way, complimented by loose decomposing matter, trees that fell over when you touched them, and holes to step into as well all along the way to the flattish summit that had about 2 inches of snow on top...which is a bit of a walk once you hit the top. Found a good line on the way out, with about 1/3 of the chaos and much quicker and more intuitive travel - nothing I have read or seen shows that others took the same route, but I sure hope they did. What a difference! Kudos to me for leading the way down- we literally popped out about 10 feet from where we went in (rock formation was the clue). From there we walked a mix of skidder paths and wet, soggy ground back to the road, crossing a creek in the process. We were in snow, rain, sleet, maybe graupel, sleet, rain, snow all day. |
