Comments
Comments: Fantastic unseasonably spring-like weather. The walk on Sawyer River Rd was pretty easy, through soft but packed snow on microspikes. We were passed by a number of well-mannered snowmobilers. Pondered what all the old stone structures to the river side of the road used to be. From the trailhead to just beyond the intersection with Carrigain Notch trail, Signal Ridge Trail was flat and pretty fast, with easy brook crossings on the way out. Sticky snow was great for traction but formed snowballs on microspikes. We struggled a little on the seemingly endless ascent but the views from the ridge and the summit were so worth it! Much quicker descent with some impromptu skiing on the steeper parts. Howell found the sticky snow hard to butt-slide on (my oversized snowshoes got in the way). By the time we were back on the flat, the trail was getting pretty soft. Snowshoes were helpful to keep from postholing constantly. There was definitely less snow over water crossings, and a few postholes that went into the drink. Sawyer River Road was also pretty slushy and mushy on the way out.

A beautiful day in the woods!
