Started the day from Unknown Pond North Trailhead. Went up to Unknown Pond - started seeing accumulating snow around maybe 2500ft elevation. Temp stayed right around freezing so it was wet and not accumulating too much. Maybe half an inch of snow around the pond, if that. From there took Killkenny Ridge trail over to Rodger's ledge, less snow as you went back downhill and not much snow at Roger's Ledge. Someone has been very recently working on the bog bridges near the middle of this section, however the worst part which I guess they haven't gotten to yet involve balancing across a single beam over deep water which wasn't particularly fun. But thanks for the new bridges! From Rogers Ledge went back to Unknown Pond. From there up to The Horn and then The Bulge. Certainly more snow in this section, maybe up to an inch or inch and a half. All wet so a bit slippery but nothing too bad. No views from the Horn due to low clouds. From the Bulge went back to the car. I'm sure all this snow will be gone in a day or two but it was still fun because it wasn't in the forecast! Total hike ended up being about 14.5 miles and ~5000ft elevation gain. |
