 | Comments: |
It may have looked and felt like fall at the trailhead and in the valleys, but above 5,400', it was full on winter conditions, with 1-3 inches of consistent snow cover and deeper drifts, particularly on Nelson Crag Trail. Temps were in the low 20s, with the wind chill on the summit hitting 5 degrees when I was up there. Barebooted between the trailhead and 5,400', both on the hike up and the hike down, and wore beater spikes between that elevation and the summit.
With all that said, if you hike the higher summits of the Whites this time of year, start packing winter layers and light traction if you haven't already- it is now that time of year where mountain conditions can be deceiving. |
