Comments
Comments: In the alpine zone, there is a thin coating of snow on surfaces that are not exposed to the sun. Even in the stretches of trail not exposed to the sun, there are many bare rock surfaces. All hikers were bare booting through the minimal snow. I experienced no slippage.
Below tree line there are some stretches of trail blanketed in leaves. The leaves are dry. There is a potential to slip on the leaves or loose rocks hidden by the leaves on steeper pitches.
There is one tricky ledge on the Scar Loop Trail that may be difficult when wet or icy. No problem today.
Most surfaces were dry.
Good views from all areas above tree line and at Durand Scar on the Scar Loop Trail and The Quay.
I made sure to include some trails with light usage including Hincks Trail, Scar and Scar Loop Trail, and the Fallsway.
Although the water levels are low, it was still worth the short side trips to see the various waterfalls (Cold Brook, Coldspur Ledges, Chandler, Tama, Salroc, and Gordon)
Did not see anyone from Appalachia up to Thunderstorm Junction except the RMC caretaker at Gray Knob (Declan) and two guests. Thereafter I met many other hikers until I turned down Scar Trail where I met no other hikers until Appalachia. There were two hikers from Poland now in NJ, a couple from Lehigh PA, and as usual many New England hikers including two planning to hike 3 of the terrifying 25 today.
