 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
I was able to carefully and slowly get my Subaru Forester (thank you x-mode) up the old Groton-Orange Highway (AKA Orange Cove Trail) from the end of New Colony Rd. to the height-of-land where Mowglis Trail enters the woods. Past Lucky #7 Pond, the road gets significantly rougher with a few washouts. Regular cars should park at the end of New Colony Rd. by the gate. |

This was a fall visit to do some work on my adopted section of Elwell Trail from Mowglis Trail to Old Dicey Rd. Today, however, I only went as far as the summit of Mowglis Mtn. (Note: This is not within the WMNF and is not affected by the current government shutdown.)
My main goal was to clear blowdowns that had been reported. I removed a total of 15 trees of various sizes. A few small, easy step overs that are on the ground have been left in place for now. I also assessed tasks to be addressed next year, most notably blazing, which is faded in much of this section.
As expected, conditions were very dry. Footing was slippery in places due to a thick layer of dry spruce needles and fallen leaves. Foliage is definitely strange in this area. Some spots look like stick season while others are still green with small pockets of color mixed in.
Also as expected, I saw no one else out here, which is one of the reasons I love Elwell Trail so much. ;) A very warm day for October! |
