Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Tripoli Road is horrible between Waterville Valley and the trailhead. The parking lot is good. Picnic table and outhouse. Plenty of toilet paper in the AM, very little on the way out. Huge crowds for Flags on the 48.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Either dry or tiny
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Great! A portion of a birch extends into the trail, but it can hardly be called a blowdown
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Lots of dogs. Good owners. They would warn ahead if the dog was temperamental or didn't like interaction. Bring plenty of water and watch the drop offs.
Bugs
Bugs: Just moths when headlamp time came.

Comments
Comments: Trail is a study in contrast. Some areas are covered with boulders, some steep and others nearly flat. I was even slower than usual, due to constantly stepping off to the side to let the crowds by. Congrats to the four year old who made it to the top.

Now for the fun! Thanks to all who mentioned Middle and West Osceola in their recent reports. We had looked at it several years ago, but only went in a little. The clouds and 5 minute drizzle broke into sun and blue skies, so we couldn't say no.

It is more herd path than actual bushwhack, although a few sections necessitated just pushing through. Weren't sure exactly where it was, but there was a small path to the left. THE CANISTER!!!!! We were too short to reach it, so we used our packs as a step stool. Hard to open, but Prema did it. So much fun reading the names I frequently see here.

Since we did not research it before going, we weren't sure how much further the West peak was, so we turned around. We will need to return anyway, because of Trailwrights72 rules. Saw some wire. Just saw on Steve Smith's blog from 2019 that the fire warden had put a phone line in.

Higher levels and flat areas have gravel, be careful.
