Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Nothing of note. The brook that drains Bunnell Notch and the drainages that feed into it were all flowing.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Lower Bunnell Notch Trail, where it follows the logging road, could use some brushing. Scattered blowdowns along this entire route. The spring spur has a lot of blowdowns packed into 0.2 mi., especially near the spring itself (which was not flowing), where it looks like a miniature fir wave occurred. The "summit" sign on Cabot still indicates a distance to Mt. Cabot Trail, which has been closed for 25 years. The Cabot high point no longer has a stick sign.

Comments
Comments: Another successful FOT48 -- our team flew the flag on Cabot today. As expected, very dry conditions for most of the way but Bunnell Notch Trail does have some muddy bits.

I hadn't done this route since 2017 so this was a nice refresher. The cabin is in good shape but most of the former viewpoints are gone, including the cabin porch and the old fire tower site. The best view is still at Bunnell Rock.

We had several visitors but I'm sure not as many as the more popular peaks that are shorter to get to. A few of the folks who passed through were doing the loop and three of our group popped over to The Bulge and back.
