The trailhead sign could be confusing. It lists two mileages: WMNF Boundary (2.1) and Mill Brook Road (3.5). Except that 3.5 is the distance to Gale Chandler Rd. The sign also suggests that the trail goes beyond its terminus at the forest boundary. Old USFS maps also indicate a northern trailhead at Gale Chandler Rd. |

There are lots of reports slagging this trail but once past the area of logging activity, I found it to be a quiet and pleasant walk in the woods. Yes, it's a road the whole way but it's like many other forest roads in the WMNF. Despite the signage about no motorized vehicles, it's clear that ATV users are breaking the rules. The WMNF boundary is marked by a red-painted post just off trail, surrounded by witness trees. There is a cairn nearby but it's downhill a bit on the northern side, in a seemingly random location.
I also walked down the northern side of the road to Gale Chandler Rd. The lower 0.7 mi. of the road has been improved for an active logging project and heavy equipment was on the move today. For bushwhackers looking to go to Cobble Hill and/or Moody Ledge from this side, it will be trivial to drive up the road to a clearing at 0.6 mi. when the logging is done.
I did see a USFS truck parked off Cobble Hill Trail but didn't see any staff around. |
