Trails: Deer Mountain Fire Tower Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, August 31, 2025
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Sophie's Lane isn't signed from Route 3, but it's just before Deer Mountain Campground. Sophie's Lane itself is narrow and rough, with a lot of deep potholes - recommend a high-clearance vehicle for it. The spur road leading to the trailhead is even rougher, and has some branches and other debris on it, so I parked at the junction and walked up the spur road. There's room for a few cars at the junction.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All very easy.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail was in good condition, and there was a lot of evidence of trail work along it - cutting blowdowns and such. My only complaint is that some of the bog bridges were narrow and extremely slippery.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: No issues.
Bugs
Bugs: Not an issue.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nothing.

Comments
Comments: This trail may not have any views, but it's still a beautiful trail. It feels remote, and has a lot of twists and turns, but experienced redliners won't have any trouble following it. The footing is mostly good, and even the traverse around the beaver swamp wasn't too bad. Some of the rocks on the upper half of the trail were very slippery, and there were a few brushy areas, but overall it was very nice. The steps have been removed from the fire tower, so it can't be climbed.

This was a fun morning hike!
