 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
I didn't bother with the parking lot and parked in the second spot before the bridge. Getting back to the car today and there was a line of cars along the road. |
|
 | Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable |
|
 | Recommended Equipment: |
|
|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
No water crossings |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Osseo had a few issues with erosion but looks like some new logs might be used as steps? In general along the various trails, the first step up on some stairs are too high causing hikers to widen the trail. A few wood planks between North and South Twin are needed. |

 | Dog-Related Notes: |
All were good dogs. |
|
 | Bugs: |
Bugs were fine in general. Near the little brook crossing an attack wasp stung me like I've never been stung before, right in the back of the head. |
|
 | Lost and Found: |
I lost a cliff bar wrapper pretty early on Liberty or Lincoln. Sorry! |

This was a 2 day, 12 summit, clockwise, Pemi-Loop. According to the 30th Edition AMC Map it's 38.2 miles (without wrong turns). Started at 4:10am on 8/9, bagged Liberty at 6:55. Osseo was a great trail. I met Little Brown Mushroom. He's a gridder in NY and NH! I wanted to beat the crowd so I made quick work of the ridge. Other hikers mentioned how few people there were. It was very sunny but hazy and warming up.
Garfield Ridge went smooth and fast. So fast, when I got to Twin Brook for Galehead, I went down the trail to the spring and filled up my water, then I went back UP to continue on what I thought was Garfield Ridge. When I passed the sign at the intersection I realized what I had done and went back DOWN, again. At this point there were a lot of trail runners doing the Pemi-Loop. All the kids had Steri-Pens and SmartWater bottles. I use a 15 year old Katadyn hand pump with the original filter.
A lot of people at Galehead hut. I dropped the pack and bagged the Mountain. I was ahead of schedule and the half-way point was somewhere between Galehead and S. Twin but I wanted to get both Twins behind me on day 1. The hike up to S. Twin was brutal. I remember going down this 15 years ago when I did a counter-clockwise loop. The hike up to S. Twin at 1-2pm took everything out of me. I dropped the pack, bagged N. Twin and hung out there for a while, then tented in the Spur.
Started day 2 (today) at 5:10. I had over 17 miles to cover so I was hoping for a 2:30 finish. Caught the sunrise on S. Twin. The hike out Twinway was quiet, smooth and there were a lot of tent spots. I dropped the pack and bagged Zealand at 7am. This side of the loop has big-pack hikers. I refilled water at Guyot but my timing was poor because a lot of people were filing out. I was trying to get by a large group and I missed the sign for W. Bond. I went up to Bond, then started toward Bondcliff before I realized my mistake. I Dropped the pack on Bond, ran over to W. Bond, returned to Bond, then went on to Bondcliff (11am). The same group of people had moved on to Bondcliff. It's a very cool view and makes for great pictures. From there it was 7(?) miles of cheeseburgers and ice cream sundaes.
I was violently stung by a wasp or hornet on Lincoln Woods. It's very painful and throbs with a sharp pain. It still hurts 4 hours later. Otherwise the hike out was nice and I wouldn't skip it, even if I had a teleporter.
