Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Since I now have a vehicle that is capable of performing such otherworldly feats (thank you, Subaru's X-Mode), I was able to drive all the way to the end of Welton Falls Rd. and park near the junction of Back 80 Loop and Old Dicey Rd. The drive up is narrow and slow, with several dirt water bars to watch out for. AWD/4WD/high-clearance required; it would be foolhardy to attempt this in a regular car.

Comments
Comments: Earlier this year I adopted the westernmost section of Elwell Trail from Mowglis Trail to Old Dicey Rd., inheriting that section from a pair of cats. Who knew that cats could do trail maintenance? Anyway, Elwell is one of my favorite trails so I was happy to have the opportunity to give back to it. Today's visit was a chance to do a little work on my section but to also assess conditions on the lightly-used Oregon Mtn. Trail (which connects to Elwell Trail at both its ends) for AMC, as a hiker had reported the route as being difficult to follow. Some notes below:

Old Dicey Rd. - Brush is encroaching on the lower part of the road; removed a blowdown cluster just past the upper trail sign; that sign and its post have been damaged by animals.

Elwell Trail from Old Dicey Rd. to Mowglis Mtn. - Cleared two blowdowns; blazing needs to be touched up; corridor needs brushing in a few spots; signage in good shape.

Oregon Mtn. Trail from Mowglis Mtn. to Carter-Gibbs Trail - The major task needed is brushing out the corridor as it's slowly becoming overgrown in non-coniferous areas (hobblebush, booooo); cleared two blowdowns and noticed five more that had been recently cut; blazes need to be repainted; signage in good shape.

Oregon Mtn. Trail from Carter-Gibbs Trail to Elwell Trail - Mostly in good shape although some brushing is needed here and there; blazes need to be repainted; signage in good shape.

Elwell Trail from Oregon Mtn. Trail to Old Dicey Rd. - Blazes need to be refreshed; the blowdowns from earlier this year have been cleared, thanks!

Needless to say, it was a hot and humid day out there. Fortunately, much of this route is in the shade which helped some. If you are heading out this way soon, bring all the water you will need. I didn't see any water anywhere today.
