Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Paugus - South Peak, NH
Trails
Trails: Kelley Trail, Lawrence Trail, Old Mast Road
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Friday, August 8, 2025
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Ferncroft was full when we got back to the lot. It looks like someone came by and filled in the potholes in the paved part of Ferncroft Road, which is that little triangle by 113A. The deep craters in the gravel road for the parking area are still there but are fine if you go slow.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The little brook crossings on Kelley Trail are rock hops. Despite how dry things have been you can replenish your water on this trail!
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There is a large, easy stepover before the Old Mast / Kelley split. There is a roughly delimbed easy stepover on Lawrence about 0.3 miles below the summit. Everything else is good to go, and that’s a sparklingly new wilderness sign on Kelley!!!
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: This is excellent footing for dogs, so mine had a blast! If it’s hot out note that the summit is bare rock and would be hot for a dog’s paws. We were up there at 830am so we had no issues.
Bugs
Bugs: Yep. The most biting troublemakers that I have seen in the past few weeks.

Comments
Comments: I haven’t hiked this route since the summer of 2020. I feel like Kelley was more scrambly then; it is super-dreamy footing now. Lawrence has erosion and those spots are like pea gravel (apparently it’s called “kitty litter trail conditions”) and I took a bit of a fall so watch your step. (I’m ok). Old Mast was smooth, smooth sailing.
