Alex and I took a chance and went up Jewell today. Got above treeline and wow -- clear, sunny skies, wind no more than 20mph, excellent visibility. We layered up and went for it. Very glad we did.
The beginning of Jewell is now directly behind the station. Go across the bridge and look for the long sticks with blue paint at the top...they show the way -- cross the tracks and head left, up the hill, and into the woods, where the path should become clear and, right now, easy to follow.
Jewell (below treeline) had a few inches of new snow on it, but was, overall, in great shape. Above treeline, I plunged through knee-deep drifts and didn't always follow the trail, since cairns and scrub are all covered with snow and it's sometimes hard to tell them apart. However, on a clear day, such as today, one can look up and see the much larger cairns on Gulfside, so one won't get lost (just hike on a day with great visibility).
Gulfside is easy to follow -- large cairns were easy to see.
Same for heading up Jefferson -- easy to follow the trail, the large cairns do their job well.
Alex and I had a great day -- this was a peak made easy by great visibility, mild winds, and not-so-bad temperatures. Wouldn't want to try this one in low visibility, though. |
