Yes, there were bugs. Yes, they tried to get into my ears and were dive-bombing my eyes all day. I sprayed, which helped, but they were annoying all day. |

I knew that I wouldn’t like this hike. Starting at the East Branch TH, the first mile or so was pleasant but the remaining three miles to the Wild River junction was a muddy, moss-covered rock, blowdown strewn, overgrown suck fest. Every foot placement mattered. There was no avoiding several boggy, watery sections - you will get wet. The two sections of the Wild River trail (from E Branch to Rainbow trail and back, then from E Branch to Eagle Link trail and back) were in better shape, but not by much. There were many times when the trail was hard to see because the forest is taking it back. Some bog bridges were a help, but yikes - this was not my idea of fun. Saw lots of moose poop but no wildlife. |
